Fort Churchill Cemetery
Lyon County
This cemetery is near Buckland's Station. Members of the Buckland family were buried here from what appears to be the 1860's through the 1880's. Prior to the fort being abandoned in 1869, soldiers who died in the area were also buried here. In 1885, congress had the remains of the soldiers removed and taken to Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City for burial. This was a major event with a procession, a brass band, attendance by veterans groups and politicians, and citizens lining the streets.
All of the stones for the Buckland family were laying down. The gate to the cemetery was locked. There were replicas of the original stones available to view. I took this as an unofficial No Trespass warning and didn't cross. Therefore, I wasn't able to get better photos of the original stones.
