Lovelock (Big Meadow) Cemetery

Pershing County

Long before the Town of Lovelock or the Big Meadow Cemetery were established, this spot served as a stop on the California Trail. On August 30, 1849, Augustus Ripley Burbank wrote, "Passed down the valley near the slough... The slough water is considerably impregnated with alkali, but is used for animals & all other purposes... No good water below this slough, nor grass." Today, dozens of unmarked, white crosses mark the spots of those buried here in times long gone.
