Virginia City- Masonic Cemetery
Storey County
The Virginia City Cemetery (AKA: Silver Terrace Cemetery) is made up of several different sections. I'm not quite sure where all of the borders for these sections are. The cemetery sections include the Catholic, Firemen's, Knights of Pythias, Masonic, Odd Fellows, etc. The main entrance to the cemetery has Masonic symbolism on it. The photographs on this page are of the gravestones with Masonic symbolism on them. There may be stones included on this page that aren't necessarily in the Masonic section. Most of the cemetery overview photographs are contained on the Virginia City Cemetery page.
There were two masonic lodges that formed in Virginia City prior to Nevada statehood in 1864. Virginia City Lodge #162 was granted permission to meet Under Dispensation from the Grand Lodge of California on January 15, 1863. Escurial Lodge #171 was granted permission to meet Under Dispensation from the Grand Lodge of California on January 22, 1864. Nevada became a state on October 31, 1864. The Grand Lodge of Nevada was then formed on January 15, 1865. Virginia City Lodge #162 became Virginia City Lodge #3 and Escurial Lodge #171 became Escurial Lodge #7 under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Nevada. Based on the decline of population in Virginia City, Virginia City Lodge #3 surrendered its Charter on May 14, 1915. Escurial Lodge #7 still meets to this day.
